Morocco’s Minister of Tourism Fatim-Zahra Ammor shared info graphs on the social network LinkedIn, showing international online interest in the country during the World Cup, which increased significantly.


With plans to fully capitalize on this significant exposure, the Minister said that this tournament, and the Atlas lions’ stellar performance “opens exciting tourism opportunities for the country.”



Through the shared maps, we can see how the geographic scope of interest in Morocco online has exceeded its usual West European and domestic field.


The “Before the World Cup“ map shows that most Morocco searches were concentrated in Morocco, Spain, Portugal, France, the Middle East, and the American Northern West Coast.


After the unexpected and highly publicized rise of the Moroccans through the competition, international online interest in the Kingdom spread throughout the globe, unlocking new potential markets for the country.


In the “After World Cup Map,“ interest skyrocketed across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, taking over the entire world map.


To Minister Ammor, “Morocco is now on the map of far more international countries than our traditional source markets.”


In fact, the official shared an additional map showing the “Volume of visit intentions to Morocco,“ which also spans the entire world.


This international interest could alleviate much of the dependency Morocco has on certain tourist provenance points, such as Europe.


“We will be working hard to convert this interest into visitors to our beautiful country, the future is bright !” comments Ammor.


Google Trends data associated with Morocco have also skyrocketed during the Atlas lions’ participation in the biggest international football tournament.


Google searches related to Morocco peaked on Saturday, December 10, the day of the historic Morocco-Portugal match, which Morocco won 1-0, against all odds.

This game alone saw “Morocco“ searches soar 100 times higher than on the beginning of the World Cup, while interest for “Morocco“ in English, French, Spanish and Arabic increased 14 times in the same period.
